Happy Moth Week! We recently found a snowberry clearwing moth (Hemaris diffinis) sipping nectar from the bottlebrush buckeye (Aesculus parviflora). This species of sphinx moth mimics a bumblebee, and they look a little like a hummingbird as well. We usually see one or two foraging the buckeye flowers in the daytime with the bees and butterflies. I had to chase this speedy little visitor, but it was worth it! This clearwing moth was moving so fast I couldn’t quite pin down the species (Hemaris species), but one thing’s for sure, it was loving the native phlox blooms. Clearwing moths are often mistaken for hummingbirds or bumblebees with their fast wings and hovering flight.
