On July 3, 1754, George Washington faced his first major battlefield test. His regiment fought a French and Indian force of 700 from Fort Necessity. It was a hard tactical lesson. French forces took advantage of the tree line for cover and concealment. This left Washington and his forces exposed in the open space around the fort. As the rain fell, bullets ripped into the fort.
