Don't fear scarf joints. Yes, scarf joints can decrease the shear strength of a beam. But if you pick the right type of scarf, size it correctly, and place it correctly it doesn't really matter. Japanese scarf joints are usually 2.5x the depth of the beam. Western scarf joints for timber framing are usually 3-4x the depth of the beam. Also, scarf joints must be oriented and placed correctly. Usually in Western timber frames, this means the scarf should be located over a brace. #timberframe #Timb
