An ALLOPHONE is one of the key concepts learners need to grasp when learning phonetics. In dictionaries you will find PHONEMIC transcriptions which work on the principle of 1 SYMBOL = 1 SOUND. This is useful for spelling to sound relationships, especially for vowels. But if you want to learn more advanced pronunciation, you need to master the VARIATIONS of each phoneme.
