The N&W Class A #1218 was built in record time, taking only two weeks to complete, breaking all previous records at the N&W locomotive shop. 1218 was built in Norfolk and Western’s East End Shops in Roanoke, Virginia in 1943. Out of all the Class A trains, #1218 is the last remaining one and was a popular excursion before officially retiring.
