Lapping shapton stones - BladeForums.com
May 27, 2020 · I ending up ordering some shapton stones, but I’m rather confused as to how lapping them works. The stones I ordered were the shapton pro from 120-30000. Not sure why I thought I would need every stone being a newbie, but it’s too late now. Regarding lapping the stones, can I just use sandpaper on top a flat tile? Should I get the atoma 140?

Aug 21, 2014 · It may happen on hard natural stones and hard ceramic when over-lapping with ultra-fine abrasives, and stone gets almost glass surface without abrasive properties. As far as I know, Glazing does not happens with Arkansas. Second, the owner (or supplier) of natural stone can make 2 sides with different properties by different lapping.

May 16, 2006 · It took the tiniest micro-curls off of a hanging hair. Freaky sharp. Even though the stone is smoother it seems to almost cut faster and load slower since more of the surface is being used. This definitely is an improvement and soon I intend to lap one side of my UF bench stone with an aging 8" X 3" DMT extra-fine hone.

Aug 3, 2009 · Lapping the stone does not reduce the grit size, but it does make a finer polish. It's the same as using a file or using a steel. They're the same material, and the composition and grain size is the same, but you get a different finish. I don't know what the original thread was, so I can't quite see where the disagreement stems from.

Mar 13, 2007 · Instead of lapping, you can dress Venev diamonds with soft dressing stone: Lapping / flattening sharpening stones with silicon carbide and electro-corundum grains. Dressing is simpler than lapping but also improves the factory surface on the first use.

Apr 17, 2018 · I just condition them with ferric choride, neutralize with baking soda. When the brass bonding starts to dish enough, I reset with SiC powder again. I noticed the 120 and 50 grit Metallic bonded stones didn't seem to need the ferric choride after SiC powder lapping, but the finer grits need more love to get the grains poking up after lapping.

Dec 17, 2024 · Its actually very easy. A flat smooth hard surface, old slab of stone counter, floor tile, or even a piece of glass. Some SiC powder of varying grits which is sold for stone lapping, made into a slurry with water. It actually laps stones very fast. It works for other things faster than sand paper and is very cheap.

What do you use for lapping your coarse stones (e.g. 120, 220, 320)
May 1, 2013 · HD tile rubbing stone works well, I also like to keep an 8" grinder wheel (with label soaked off) in the bottom of my rinse bucket and just rub the stone's face on it when I rinse the/clean the surface - then I never need to do big lapping job and it stays flat. Recently I started using a diamond lapping disk for the coarse stuff.

Mar 21, 2016 · Honestly, the main thing stopping me is the lapping stone/plate required. I don't think they recommend lapping with anything other than their dedicated Shapton lapping plate and it's just crazy expensive ($350-ish). Maybe you could lap with an Atoma 400 or something, but even that adds another ~$100 to the overall cost.
