The series documents drag queen RuPaul in search of the "Next Drag Superstar" for the United States with a cash prize of $200,000.

The seventeenth season of RuPaul's Drag Race was officially announced by World of Wonder on October 30, 2023. Casting opened the same day with deadline of January 5, 2024. On November 22, 2024, RuPaul's Drag Race social media accounts announced that Season 17 will premiere January 2025 on MTV.
