The USS Robert Kerrey will be an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer, the third named for a Navy SEAL after the USS Michael P. Murphy and USS McFaul.

Robert Kerrey led Navy SEAL teams in Vietnam and was later elected governor of Nebraska and then to the U.S. senate for a dozen years.

First a bridge and now a Navy destroyer has been named after former Nebraska governor and U.S. Sen. Bob Kerrey. This week, Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro announced that the Navy’s newest Arleigh Burke-class Guided Missile Destroyer has been named the USS Robert Kerrey (DDG 146).

The U.S. Navy has named its two newest Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyers as the future USS Intrepid and USS Robert Kerrey. DDG-145 is the fifth ship to be called Intrepid while DDG-146 was named after Joseph Robert Kerrey,

Years before becoming Nebraska governor and then senator, he was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor in 1970 for gallantry under fire in Vietnam.

This marks the fifth time a Navy vessel has donned the Intrepid name, and the first since 1974, when the carrier Intrepid was decommissioned.
