After Tropical Storm Chantal made landfall in South Carolina over the Fourth of July weekend bringing flash flooding to central North Carolina, the tropics are now quiet. Well, sort of.

Tropical Storm Chantal became the first named storm of the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season to hit the United States after it made landfall in South Carolina early Sunday. It isn’t a major threat to land.

Tropical Storm Chantal grew in strength as it approached the southeast U.S. coast. It's forecasted to bring heavy rains to parts of the Carolinas on Sunday.

A flood watch was in effect July 7 for several states, including Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. "Storm total rainfall of 2 to 4 inches, with local amounts up to 6 inches, is expected," the Weather Prediction Center said in a 5 a.m. ET update. "An elevated risk for flash flooding will continue."

As the remnants of Tropical Storm Chantal stream northward into the Tri-State Area, major weather changes are in store after a near-perfect Fourth of July weekend in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut.

Dozens of residents needed to be rescued from rising water, and hundreds of roads were closed as the storm moved over the central part of North Carolina.
