The singer, pianist and four-time Grammy winner had two other No. 1 hits with "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" and "Feel Like Makin' Love."

Flack won two Grammys for "Killing Me Softly with His Song": record of the year and best pop vocal performance, female in 1973. The Fugees would record the song over 20 years later with Lauryn Hill singing lead vocals, breathing new life into the breakup ballad.

Roberta Flack did not write Killing Me Softly. There is some dispute about who did. Two music industry veterans were involved: composer Charles Fox (who also wrote a lot of TV theme songs, including The Love Boat) and lyricist Norman Gimbel.
