A federal judge in Miami ruled Thursday that "Alligator Alcatraz," the contested migrant detention facility in the Florida Everglades, can remain operational for now, but it cannot be expanded and no additional detainees can be brought in.

A judge ruled that the state and federal governments acted illegally by not conducting an environmental review before building the center in the Florida Everglades.

A federal judge issued a preliminary injunction Thursday halting further expansion and ordering the winding down of an immigration detention center built in the middle of the Florida Everglades.
