Hurricane Erin intensified into a Category 4 storm, lashing the Caribbean with powerful winds and triggering evacuations in North Carolina’s Outer Banks as dangerous surf and rip currents threaten the US East Coast this week.

Morrison, the founder of Reach St. Pete, was in the middle of moving her nonprofit’s headquarters to a new building. With nowhere for donations to go, she rerouted supplies to her home, which would become the organization’s makeshift base of operations for the next four days.

The storm will remain a major hurricane through the middle of the week, according to the National Hurricane Center.

An eyewall replacement cycle is underway within Hurricane Erin as the monster storm continues to barrel across the Atlantic while bringing gusty winds and rain to Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands after rapidly intensifying into a catastrophic Category 5 hurricane over the weekend.

Hurricane Erin, after strengthening into a Category 5 storm early Saturday, weakened to Category 3 by Sunday morning and has taken a track slightly more south than originally forecast, the National Hurricane Center said.
