The two moons of Mars, Phobos and Deimos, were discovered in 1877 by the American astronomer Asaph Hall using the 26-inch refractor telescope at the U.S. Naval Observatory in Washington D.C.

This means that previous probes that visited Mars only studied one side of Deimos' surface — until Hope. Hope was launched in mid-2020 and reached Mars in early 2021.

That was the suspected origin for the smaller of Mars’ two moons, Deimos. Now, scientists aren’t so sure, thanks to incredible new images from the United Arab Emirates’ Hope orbiter.
