The fifth major storm in three weeks is approaching the Philippines, prompting more largescale evacuations and a United Nations request for emergency funds to help the government ease the plight of hard-hit villagers.

Super Typhoon Usagi made landfall in the Philippines on Thursday as authorities ordered evacuations in many of the country’s northeastern towns. Usagi is the fifth typhoon in a month to hit the archipelago nation.
