Two counties in southwestern Pennsylvania are under a flood watch issued by the National Weather Service (NWS).

On Thursday at 3:14 a.m. a winter weather advisory was issued by the National Weather Service valid for Friday between 2 a.m. and 9 a.m. for Carbon, Monroe, Lehigh and Northampton counties.

The National Weather Service (NWS) had winter weather warnings in place for 14 states early Friday, with up to 4 feet of snow forecast for some parts of the country.

Freezing rain is expect ahead of the Friday morning commute, and PennDOT has vehicles restrictions planned on area highways.

In Carbon and Monroe counties, 6 to 10 inches of snow is possible, the National Weather Service said Friday afternoon when issuing the watch. For Pike and Wayne counties, 5 to 9 inches is possible, the NWS said.

The surrounding National Weather Service Offices have extended an Extreme Cold Warning for parts of our viewing area, mainly within The Laurel Highlands. This is the first time The National Weather Service out of State College has issued the new weather headline.

This new type of weather warning was activated because of the dangerously cold temperatures and wind-chill readings in northeastern Pennsylvania.
