Gaza’s Rafah border crossing with Egypt reopened on Monday for limited traffic, a key step in the Israeli-Hamas ceasefire but a mostly symbolic development on the ground as few people will be allowed to travel in either direction and no goods will be going into the war-torn territory.

Gaza’s only border crossing with Egypt reopened partially on Monday morning after Israel closed it nearly two years ago, according to an Israeli security official, allowing a small number of Palestinians to leave the war-torn enclave and even fewer to return.

The Rafah crossing will be run by supervisors from the European Union and local Palestinian staff, while Israel will carry out remote security checks. On Sunday, Israeli authorities said a trial opening of the crossing was carried out and completed.

An Egyptian official said 50 Palestinians would cross in each direction in the first day of the crossing’s operation.

Some Palestinians were able to enter and exit Gaza via the crossing for the first time since May 2024. The reopening marks progress toward the ceasefire deal’s second phase.
