Armed forces in Sudan’s civil war are perpetrating systematic sexual violence against young children, with one-year-olds the youngest survivors of rape, according to a new report from UNICEF, the United Nations’ (UN) children’s agency.

The security condition in Sudan has deteriorated after the war between the military and its rival paramilitary, Rapid Support Forces, broke out in 2021.

The United Nations say sexual violence against children is being used as a war tactic in a widespread manner in Sudan. Millions are at risk, according to a new report.

More than 30% of the child rape victims were boys, UNICEF said. The victims include 16 children under the age of 5 and four infants. The cases were reported in the states of Gedaref, Kassala, Gezeira, Khartoum, River Nile, Northern State, South Kordofan, North Darfur and West Darfur.

Armed men are raping and sexually assaulting children as young as one during Sudan's civil war, says the UN children's agency, Unicef. Mass sexual violence has been widely documented as a weapon of war in the country's nearly two-year conflict.
