Survivors and mourners gathered at mass graves in Indonesia, Thailand and other places along the Indian Ocean that were devastated by the 2004 tsunami — the deadliest in the world.

Yesterday, communities along Thailand’s Andaman coast held ceremonies to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the 2004 tsunami.

In Thailand, people gathered at a memorial ceremony in Ban Nam Khem, a small fishing village in Phang Nga province that bore the brunt of the devastating wave in the country. The tsunami claimed the lives of over 8,000 people in Thailand. Many remain missing and nearly 400 bodies are unclaimed to this day.

A candlelight vigil was held on Thursday in the Thai village of Ban Nam Khem to mark 20 years since the massive Indian Ocean tsunami hit the region in one of modern history’s worst natural disasters.

Tearful mourners across Asia have commemorated the 220,000 people who died two decades ago when a tsunami hit coastlines around the Indian Ocean.
