Surprisingly, some experiments have shown that low-frequency infrasound, with a frequency range of 1 to 10 Hz, is produced during tornadogenesis —the birth of a tornado—and the course of its life.

Maps of patterns of tornadogenesis, or the process by which a tornado forms, show that between 1951 and 1985, tornado formation peaked in northern Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas.

Tornado-producing storms can emit infrasound more than an hour before tornadogenesis, which inspired a group of researchers to develop a long-range, passive way of listening in on storms.
