Cantlay played in Sunday's final group with Fleetwood and finished in a tie for second place. The 33-year-old, who could be a captain's pick for this year's U.S. Ryder Cup team, was so slow that tournament officials put the final group on the clock over the back nine as they fell over a hole behind the group in front of them.

On Sunday, Tommy Fleetwood and Patrick Cantlay played the final round of the Tour Championship in the same group. Before play began, Cantlay was considered Fleetwood’s main threat, with both players starting level at 16 under par.

By the time Patrick Cantlay wrapped up his fourth birdie in the last five holes for a 6-under 64 to take the lead, and Tommy Fleetwood dried himself off from a double bogey with a pair of birdies for a 67 to catch him,
