Honouring veterans is done by wearing a poppy throughout the first few weeks of November, and there’s also a reason behind that emblem honouring service men and women.

Many gathered at Place du Canada in Montreal to honour Canada’s veterans during a Remembrance Day service against a backdrop of snow. The ceremony included a 21-gun salute and a helicopter flyover from the 438 Tactical Helicopter Squadron. Montreal mayor-elect Soraya Martinez Ferrada and federal MP Marc Miller attended the ceremony.

On Tuesday, Nov. 11, Calgarians will take time to reflect on the men and women who gave their lives fighting for Canada's freedom.

All are invited to the Veterans Day Ceremony & Remembrance Day Recognition at 11 a.m. on Nov. 11 at Beal Memorial Cemetery in Fort Walton Beach.

Princess Anne will miss the National Service of Remembrance on Sunday set at the Cenotaph. She is currently in Australia, on a brief royal tour of the Commonwealth country to mark the 100th anniversary of the Royal Australian Corps of Signals. Anne has been Colonel-in-Chief of the organization since 1977.

Hundreds attended Victoria Park on Tuesday for Remembrance Day, battling through snow and slush in downtown London for the annual observance at the park’s cenotaph. “Thank you all for coming on this cold November day,” master of ceremonies Jim Swan said to the crowd. “Your attendance is appreciated by the veterans as well as the serving forces.”

The cenotaph at Victory Square (200 West Hastings St.) marks the site of the ceremonies, at 10:30 a.m. including choirs and soloists, prayers and speeches followed by two minutes of silence at 11 a.m., laying of wreaths and a parade to follow.

Tuesday is known as Armistice Day — or Veterans Day in the United States and Remembrance Day in Britain — marking the end of World War I.

Events and services have taken place across Northern Ireland to mark Armistice Day. At Stormont, members of the Northern Ireland Assembly held a memorial service led by the speaker Edwin Poots, who laid a poppy wreath in tribute to the fallen.
