Python has become the most popular programming language on GitHub, while the use of Jupyter Notebooks has also soared, according to GitHub’s Octoverse 2024 report.

The survey found that Python is more popular than Java overall. A total of 52% reported using Python this year, compared to 49% who said they used Java. Last year it was 55% to Java and 54% to Python.

JetBrains asked developers to pick up to three languages they consider their primary programming language. In this context, JavaScript comes out on top (39%), followed Java (37%), and Python (31%).
