As morning dawned, a five-story apartment building near a leafy park in northwest Kyiv smoldered in ruin. Firefighters in yellow helmets doused the flames, trying to bring the inferno under control, as neighbors in thick coats watched. Across the street, the windows of a nearby building had been blown out.

It was the latest in a series of deadly Russian strikes, which have intensified as cease-fire talks have largely stalled.

An overnight Russian drone and missile attack in and around Kyiv killed one person, sparked fires in residential areas and damaged an entrance to a metro station that serves as a bomb shelter, Ukrainian authorities said on Monday.
