An off-duty police officer fatally shot a man who was holding an imitation firearm, New York City police said at a press conference just after midnight Saturday.It happened Friday night on William Avenue near Hylan Boulevard in Staten Island's Great Kills neighborhood.

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — A man who allegedly displayed what appeared to be firearm near a popular diner and during a subsequent encounter with two off-duty police officers in Great Kills was fatally shot by one of the cops, a law-enforcement source told the Advance/SILive.com.

The gun-wielding man — whom sources identified as Jesse Campbell, 44 — had a confrontation with two off-duty NYPD officers outside the diner, during which he pointed the supposed weapon at them, according to sources.
