Nintendo Sues Palworld Studio for Its Pokemon-Like Shooter Game
Nintendo and The Pokemon Company have filed a lawsuit in Tokyo District Court against Japanese video game studio Pocketpair, alleging that its parody shooter game Palworld is violating intellectual property laws.
Amid the Palworld dispute, one analyst says Nintendo only strikes when it wants to because it "could have sued half the gaming industry back in 2017"
One analyst reckons that Nintendo's laundry list of patents means it could have sued countless games over the years, but the company is only targeting Palworld over its similarities to Pokemon now because it's inclined to do so.
Pokemon Vs. Palworld: Why Nintendo Will Probably Win, According To Analyst
Pocketpair recently disclosed that it will not switch Palworld to a free-to-play or live-service model. As Toto alluded to above, it's believed that Pocketpair will soon announce Palworld's PlayStation 5 port. Sony and Pocketpair have already teamed up for a Palworld merchandise deal with an eye towards expanding the franchise beyond games.
Nintendo's patent lawsuit shows it's "given up making the case that Palworld's characters are similar to Pokemon's," analyst explains
Nintendo and the Pokemon Company's lawsuit against fellow creature-collectathon Palworld is for patent infringement, rather than copyright infringement, and one analyst reckons that means Nintendo has "given up" on trying to argue that Pals look too similar to Mons.
