THE HAGUE, Netherlands (AP) — NATO leaders agreed on Wednesday on a massive hike in defense spending after pressure from U.S. President Donald Trump, and expressed their “ironclad commitment” to come to each other’s aid if attacked.

While Trump got what he wanted at the brief NATO summit, his allies will be relieved he committed to the fundamental principle of collective defense.

NATO leaders committed to investing 5 percent of their annual GDP on "core defense requirements as well as defense- and security-related spending by 2035," according to the final summit statement that the 32 leaders signed.
