Gov. Jeff Landry announced Monday that the state had developed a protocol for executing people with nitrogen gas, allowing it to resume executions after 15 years. At least three district attorneys have since sought death warrants.

Louisiana will seek to resume carrying out death sentences in the coming months after a 15-year pause, this time using nitrogen gas as the execution method.

On Thursday, Oklahoma Attorney General Gentner Drummond announced an agreement to transfer a convicted murderer from a federal prison in Louisiana to Oklahoma to carry out his execution. According to a news release,

Louisiana has approved a protocol for executions by nitrogen hypoxia, which will allow death sentences to be carried out again after nearly 15 years, Gov. Jeff Landry said Monday.

Governor Landry announced that the La. Dept. of Public Safety and Corrections has finalized and implemented an updated protocol that allows for the sentences of inmates on death Row to be carried out.

The Louisiana governor and attorney general are in favor of getting the execution process moving again after executions were stalled. That was because the drugs were difficult if not impossible to get.
