Scott, a shooting guard, won NBA championships in 1985, 1987 and 1988 as part of the Lakers' "Showtime" era. He led the team in scoring with a career-best 21.7 points in 1987-88.

Scott, who played for the Lakers and won three championships from 1983 to '93 and again during Kobe Bryant 's rookie season in 1996-97, was named the 25th head coach in franchise history.

Scott has been critical of his players throughout an abysmal campaign. The Lakers now are 20-57 after their 105-100 loss Tuesday night, upping their record for the most losses in franchise history.
