The state covers an area of 8,621 square miles of mostly hilly territory, with an embedded valley of 700 square miles, where the Meitei community lives and has had a historical kingdom. The surrounding hills are populated by hill tribes classified into Naga and Kuki groups. The official language of the state is Meitei, which belongs to the Tibet-Burman family. The hill tribes speak separate Tibeto-Burman languages.
