Madison is a city in Lake County, South Dakota, United States. The population was 6,191 at the 2020 census. It is the county seat of Lake County and is home to Dakota State University. Madison is located in the center of Lake County in southeastern South Dakota, 31 miles northwest of Sioux Falls, 21 miles southwest of Brookings, and 157 miles east of Pierre. It is situated between Lake Herman and Lake Madison.
